Benny Zen – Run Back To The Safety Of The Town – (White Vinyl or CD Version)
With the first album, “UFO Conspiracy Believer”, the snappily monikered Benny Zen; The Recording Artist, Featuring The Syphilis Madmen positioned himself as a unique voice within the Belgian alternative pop landscape with a critically acclaimed debut that betrayed his past successes with Nemo and as one third of Mitsoobishy Jacson (with Mauro Pawlowski of dEUS and Pascal Deweze of Sukilove). This time he returns with another kaleidoscopic ride of off kilter pop with ‘Run Back To The Safety Of The Town’.
The record tackles urban paranoia (‘We don’t want your Disco Show around’), nihilism (‘Got a lot of Horseshit left’, ‘Objects that float’), psychedelia (‘I don’t mind his black Submarine’, ‘An Aeroplane might knock you out’) and uncut hillbilly lyrics.
Benny and his band the Syphilis Madmen mix rather disturbing issues with major chords and infectious vocal melodies.
The album was recorded by Pascal Deweze (Sukilove, Broken Glass Heroes) in his studio ‘Jezus’ and mastered by Uwe Teichert (dEUS, Public Enemy, Placebo).
“Early Beck with the melodic zing of Sparklehorse.”- Artrocker
“Manages to pull together many diverse elements; the tongue in check accessibility of They Might Be Giants, the free thinking approach of David Byrne, glorious slices of 60’s pop and an often deadpan folk vocal style, but even that gives you only a vague starting point. Do yourself a favour and check them out today.” – Green Man Music Reviews
“Like Teenage Fanclub re-working of the theme from ‘Deliverance” – Loud Horizon
“Sonic Youth at their most accessible” – The Dreaded Press
“You’ll be hitting the play button time and time again” – Is This Music?
